    OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS:
BEYOND THE MIRACLE

In the year 358, the Mother of God appeared in a dream to both Pope Liberius and a devout couple, asking that a basilica be built in her honor in a place that she would miraculously indicate.

Romans awoke to find snow covering the Esquiline Hill. The faithful watched as the Pope traced in the newly fallen snow the outline of the future church: "Santa Maria ad Nives," "Our Lady of the Snows," honoring the Virgin Mary and her miracle. Today, it is the oldest church in the West dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and one of Rome's four great Papal Basilicas.

Inspired by the "Northern Lights," Missionary Oblate Fr. Paul Schulte, imagined Our Lady of the Snows coming to the Inuit people. Eventually, all this culminated in the building of a National Shrine to Our Lady of the Snows.

This inspiring story is for all the faithful and generous people who have been inspired by Mary and her "Yes" to God's call. "Our Lady of the Snows" is a mother, a protectress who spreads her mantle over the poorest and most desolate of her children to bring them into the light of faith.
